about

Numbers and music have an intimate relationship, which I exploited for The Man Who Had No Eyes. The original short story is encoded in a string of numbers (such as 140:8:2:12). Instead of decoding it into text, I decoded it directly into music. The first number became the length of the note (ticks in a MIDI sequencer). The second, multiplied by ten, became the velocity (how hard you hit the note). The third became the octave. The last number became the note (1=C, 2=C#, 3=D, etc.).

What was surprising is how tonal the piece is. There is a lot of dissonance and odd intervals between the notes, but the piece is definitely in the key of D minor, with the vast majority of the notes being various octaves of D.
